Creative Assembly is celebrating 25 years of the Total War franchise. During a special showcase dedicated to the series, the studio revealed a major announcement for fans eager for more strategy games: the next title will be Medieval III.
A Return to the Medieval Era
The original Medieval: Total War was released in 2002 as only the second game in the series. A sequel followed in 2006. After a long hiatus, players will finally be able to return to this era with an entirely new entry in the franchise.
The Ultimate Medieval Strategy Sandbox
Creative Assembly describes Total War: Medieval III as “the ultimate medieval strategy sandbox,” designed to let players shape kingdoms, rewrite history, and experience the Middle Ages in unprecedented depth. By combining careful historical authenticity with a high degree of player freedom, the studio emphasizes that this is not just another sequel, but a complete rebirth of historical Total War.
Early Development and New Technology
Fans will have to be patient, however, as the project is currently still in “early pre-production.”
The game will be developed using Warcore, the latest version of Creative Assembly’s proprietary engine. According to the studio, these upgraded tools will support a more immersive and responsive experience than in previous titles. Warcore will also help pave the way for future Total War games to launch on consoles, expanding the series beyond its traditional platforms.
Celebrating 25 Years of Total War
“It’s incredible to think Total War is 25 years old,” says Roger Collum, Vice President of Total War. “We’re extremely grateful that we get to make games that our community can enjoy for decades, and without them we wouldn’t be here. This year was a moment when all Total War fans—old or new, historical or fantasy—could come together and celebrate the exciting next chapter in our story. Here’s to 25 more years!”
More Announcements on the Way
The reveals do not end here. Sega and Creative Assembly have also teased a surprise announcement for The Game Awards showcase on December 11. This project is said to be a new game of its own and appears to be targeting a much earlier release than Medieval III. Further details, including any pricing in USD, EUR, and INR, have yet to be disclosed.
