Sony appears to be preparing to launch its first LCD TVs with RGB LED backlighting, likely under a new “True RGB” brand, in 2026.
The Walkman Blog has discovered that Sony trademarked the term “True RGB” in Japan and Canada in October. FlatpanelsHD has confirmed the registration. In Canada, “True RGB” is registered exclusively for use with LED displays and television sets, making it clear that the term is intended specifically for TVs.
Sony’s 2026 TV Lineup
FlatpanelsHD has already seen Sony’s advanced RGB LED technology and published an early hands-on article in March. The report highlights several advantages, including better color volume, wider viewing angles, and higher energy efficiency compared with current LCD backlight systems.
While Samsung is promoting its RGB LED approach under the “RGB microLED” label, Sony has not yet confirmed how it will market this new generation of LCD TVs.
Sony’s first RGB LED LCD models are expected to launch in 2026. Supply chain information suggests that the Bravia 7 II and Bravia 9 II series are both planned to use RGB LED backlighting, with screen sizes ranging from 50 inches up to 115 inches.
RGB LED LCD vs. OLED

Sony continues to follow a dual-technology strategy, offering premium LCD TVs alongside its OLED models, which include both WOLED and QD-OLED variants.
At least some 2026 TVs from the major manufacturers are expected to be announced next month at CES 2026 in Las Vegas.
