Sony unveils 200MP AI camera sensor that changes mobile photography

Sony has introduced a new mobile photography sensor, the LYT 901, designed for upcoming flagship smartphones. This is Sony’s first 200-megapixel sensor for phones, so it is attracting a great deal of attention. The manufacturer aims not only for record-breaking resolution, but also for significantly improved real-world image quality.

From IMX09E to Lytia series

Recently, this sensor was frequently mentioned in leaks under the name IMX09E. It has now been officially added to the Lytia series and given a simpler designation. This step indicates that Sony is preparing for a serious move into a new technological stage.

The new sensor is expected to compete with other manufacturers’ 200-megapixel platforms. The key point is that the high pixel count is supported by advanced processing. As a result, users can expect real benefits rather than just impressive numbers in the specifications.

Large sensor and pixel architecture

The LYT 901 offers a large 1/1.12-inch image area with 0.7-micrometer pixels. This combination enables 200-megapixel images with a high level of fine detail. The generous physical size also helps capture light more efficiently, which is essential for better performance in low-light conditions.

Instead of the classic Bayer filter, the sensor uses a Quad Quad Bayer layout. This is converted in hardware into a 2 × 2 Bayer structure to enable more precise processing. Artificial intelligence is integrated into this internal remapping to reduce noise and visual artifacts.

HDR performance and cleaner image output

The sensor’s analog-to-digital converter operates with 12-bit precision. The fine 12-bit ADC helps preserve smooth tonal gradations and lowers noise levels. As a result, even full-resolution images should look cleaner and more natural.

In HDR mode, Sony combines a dual-gain approach with an additional short exposure frame. This method helps control highlight clipping and reduces ghosting in fast-moving scenes. The dynamic range exceeds 100 decibels, so details are preserved both in deep shadows and bright areas.

Zoom capabilities and expected first smartphones

The LYT 901 supports 2× optical-quality zoom and up to 4× in-sensor zoom. The 4× zoom acts as a virtual telephoto lens without the need for an additional optical element. This is particularly useful when recording 4K video or taking photos from greater distances.

Pixel binning modes allow users to choose between 50-megapixel and 12.5-megapixel images. These modes improve night photography and help stabilize images at high zoom levels. The first smartphones expected to feature this sensor are the Oppo Find X9 Ultra and the Vivo X300 Ultra, which are anticipated to arrive in 2026.
