Rare first introduced the perilous volcanic region known as the Devil’s Roar to Sea of Thieves in 2018. This cluster of islands has received little attention since then, but that is about to change with the upcoming seasonal update, Return to the Devil’s Roar.
New Enemy: The Eternal Guard
In this update, Rare is adding the Eternal Guard as a new type of enemy for players to face. This ancient foe can become almost invisible in combat to flank crews, and it wields a powerful spear capable of launching ranged attacks. When defeated, the Eternal Guard will drop keys that grant access to a new type of location.
Sanctuaries of the Banished
Players will now encounter underground structures called Sanctuaries of the Banished scattered across the Devil’s Roar islands. A key obtained from a fallen Eternal Guard is required to open these sanctuaries. Inside, crews will find “banished ancient treasure” that can be looted and sold to trading companies for gold and prestige, whether they deal in USD, EUR, or INR.
Trident of the Banished
Within these same chambers, crews can also discover the new Trident of the Banished weapon. This variant of the rare ranged trident fires energy bubbles that charge more quickly and inflict increased damage compared to previous versions.
Smugglers, Events, and Seasonal Rewards
Two members of the Smugglers’ League have relocated to the Devil’s Roar, giving players easier access to their services in this hazardous region. Rare also plans to introduce new events focused on the area later in the season. As with any new season, players can expect a wide range of ship and player cosmetics through both free and premium battle passes, as well as rewards for completing deeds and commendations.
Release Date and Future Plans
Sea of Thieves Season 18: Return to the Devil’s Roar will launch on December 11, 2025, on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.
Earlier in the year, the Microsoft-owned studio also shared its plans for 2026. The new year will finally introduce long-promised custom servers. These servers will allow premium subscribers to create fully customizable sessions with support for custom commands, modified game rules, weather control, cinematic camera tools, and more.
